The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has condemned the hostile behavior of some New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters during the one-week memorial service for the late Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, warning that such actions could cost the party votes in the upcoming by-election.
Addressing the Chief of Akwatia on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah cautioned that political hostility risks undermining the party’s electoral prospects.

“If you are new in politics, you may not fully grasp what they did. They are making the New Patriotic Party unattractive. No town in Ghana can be considered a no-go area, because we are all Ghanaians. If today I am in your town to campaign, remember that tomorrow you will also come to my hometown to campaign. That is why things of such nature should be frowned upon,” he stated.
The 40-day observance of the late MP nearly descended into chaos when supporters of the NPP reportedly attempted to assault Asiedu Nketiah.

The incident occurred at the Wenchi Durbar grounds on Friday, August 29, 2025, when he and his entourage arrived to commiserate with the bereaved family.
Some angry NPP women and party supporters reportedly attempted to physically attack the NDC chairman and his security detail, prompting swift resistance from his team.
The situation escalated until police personnel intervened to restore order. The intervention of New Juaben South MP Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and former Eastern Regional Chairman Kingston Akomeng Kissi helped calm the agitated crowd, allowing Asiedu Nketiah to safely exchange pleasantries with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
