NDC targets Suhum, Nsawam/Adoagyiri and Tolon for possible by-elections

Suhum MP, Frank Asiedu (L) Tolon MP Alhaji Habib (M) and Frank Annoh-Dompreh Nsawam/Adoagyiri MP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has indicated plans to pursue possible by-elections in the Suhum, Nsawam/Adoagyiri and Tolon constituencies, citing alleged electoral irregularities during the 2024 parliamentary elections.

The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency who doubles as the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, disclosed this in an interview on UTV that has since been shared on social media.

According to Gbande, the party is determined to legally challenge parliamentary seats it believes were unfairly taken from it by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He revealed that once ongoing court proceedings relating to the Kpandia constituency are concluded, the NDC will turn its attention to the Nsawam/Adoagyiri seat currently held by Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

“When we are done with the court issue on Kpandia, we are going to follow up on the Annoh-Dompreh seat for a potential by-election,” Gbande said.

He alleged that the Nsawam/Adoagyiri election was compromised, claiming that Annoh-Dompreh engaged in actions that undermined the integrity of the electoral process.

“For Annoh-Dompreh, I was there and everybody saw him on TV. He destroyed the election and maneuvered to win, so we will go there,” he stated.

Gbande further mentioned that the party is also preparing to challenge results in Suhum and Tolon, insisting that those constituencies were similarly affected by irregularities.

He noted that the Tolon seat is already the subject of legal proceedings.

“All the places that they rigged the election, we will go there, Suhum, Tolon. Even for Tolon, his issue is already in court,” he said.

He dismissed claims that the NDC’s actions are aimed at weakening or destabilising the NPP, stressing that the party’s objective is to seek redress through the courts wherever it believes electoral malpractice occurred.

“Nobody should accuse the NDC of trying to collapse the NPP. Everywhere that they cheated us, we will follow up and seek re-election,” Gbande added.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Ghana has ordered the Electoral Commission (EC) to suspend all proceedings and activities related to the Kpandai parliamentary rerun, pending the final determination of a case before the court.

In effect, the apex court’s ruling has put on hold all preparations by the EC to conduct the election, which was slated for December 30, 2025.

This, per the court’s ruling, will remain in effect until all pending legal issues are fully resolved.

The case has been adjourned to January 13, 2026, to allow for further consideration of the matters raised by the parties.

The Supreme Court's ruling follows an application filed by the embattled Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Matthew Nyindam.

Supreme Court suspends Kpandai constituency election re-run

The application sought to overturn a High Court ruling in Tamale that annulled the 2024 parliamentary election results and ordered a rerun of the election results.

Lawyer for the embattled lawmaker, Gary Nimako Marfo, argued that the High Court, Commercial Division in Tamale, wrongfully assumed jurisdiction over the petition filed by NDC candidate Daniel Nsala Wakpal.

“The Parliamentary Election Petition filed by the first interested party on 25th January 2025… was invalid and could not have properly invoked the jurisdiction of the High Court, Commercial Division, Tamale,” the report noted.

The High Court ruling, delivered on November 24, 2025, nullified the entire Kpandai parliamentary election and directed that a rerun be conducted within 30 days.
