As President John Dramani Mahama pushes forward with his ambitious Reset Agenda, conversations within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are already turning to the party’s next chapter: the 2028 presidential elections.
Among the emerging names, one figure is steadily gaining momentum Akwasi Oppong-Fosu.
With no official declarations from prospective candidates, NDC faithful—affectionately known as “Akatamansonians” are speculating about who can carry Mahama’s vision forward.
Many believe the party’s next leader must be a unifying force capable of consolidating its base and strengthening its electoral prospects.
One of the loudest voices in this conversation is Thomas Dindiego, a former NDC Constituency Communications Officer for Amenfi East.
He has openly declared his support for Oppong-Fosu, the current Board Chairman of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) and former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.
According to Dindiego, Oppong-Fosu represents the party’s best chance to heal internal divisions and foster cohesion.
“Factionalism is one of the greatest obstacles to our party’s strength,” Dindiego asserts.
He describes Oppong-Fosu as “fair but firm, principled yet approachable,” qualities he says make him widely respected and well-suited to lead Ghana through complex political terrain.
Oppong-Fosu’s over 40 years of experience in governance, public policy, and politics bolster this case.
He has served under three NDC presidents—Jerry John Rawlings, John Evans Atta Mills and John Dramani Mahama and held key leadership roles, including;
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development
Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
Minister of State at the Presidency (Development Authorities)
Head of Local Government Services
Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development
Global Perspective and Leadership Credentials
Dindiego argues that modern leadership demands competence and a global outlook, both of which Oppong-Fosu brings to the table. Internationally, he has served as;
President, United Cities and Local Governments of Africa (UCLG-Africa, Rabat)
Vice President, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG, Barcelona)
Chairman, Africa-Caribbean-Pacific Local Government Platform (Brussels)
Member, UN Advisory Committee on Local Authorities
Advisory Board Member, African Business Chamber
He also founded and chairs the Africa Global Emergence Centre (AGEC), a think tank advancing Africa’s role in global development, and leads Africa Growth Solutions, which focuses on fostering investment and economic ties.
Dindiego believes Oppong-Fosu’s leadership offers both continuity and renewal.
“He can bridge divides within the party and the nation, ensuring the Reset Agenda benefits all Ghanaians,” he says.
Cautioning against risky choices in the 2028 race, Dindiego calls on the NDC to back a leader who can inspire grassroots members, unify party leadership, and build on Mahama’s legacy.
“Among the list of interested persons, Hon. Oppong-Fosu stands out as the ideal candidate for 2028,” he concludes.
