NDC had superior message – Defeated NPP candidate admits

The defeated parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party in the September 2, 2025, Akwatia by-election, Solomon Kwame Asumadu, has admitted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s campaign message caused his heavy defeat.

According to Asumadu, the NDC convincingly presented a message that the constituents needed a Member of Parliament from the Majority side who could easily go to President John Dramani Mahama and ask for developmental projects for the constituency.

Speaking to Angel FM after his defeat, he admitted that the constituents bought into the message presented by the NDC and that became very difficult for him as an opposition member to convince them otherwise.

The NDC, he added, indicated that since the party had already formed a super Majority in Parliament, an opposition MP for a constituency like Akwatia, which needed a lot of development, will not be advisable.

In view of this, he claimed the constituents accepted the message from the NDC because they needed development and, therefore, voted massively for the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

“The NDC obviously had a stronger message that was difficult to beat because everyone was talking about development, so, the NDC took advantage of its incumbency, saying, I cannot go to the president to lobby for projects,” he said.

He added that the NDC’s core message that; “A prince is he whose father is the chief, as well as their catchphrase that a son must always stand by his father,” further weakened all the campaign efforts put in by the NPP.

He said the constituents were simply not ready to vote for an opposition MP because “they claimed they needed someone who could lobby for their developmental needs directly from the corridors of power.”

The NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo won the election by 18,199 votes, defeating Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who garnered 15,235 votes.

This means that the total number of Members of Parliament on the side of the Minority NPP has been reduced by one, bringing their total to 87.
