Minority fights Akufo-Addo for ‘campaigning’ in the heat of coronavirus crisis

President Nana Akufo-Addo President Nana Akufo-Addo

The minority in parliament has described President Akufo-Addo’s announcement to construct 88 district hospitals as a mere political campaign.

President Akufo-Addo on Sunday, April 26, 2020, during his national address on Covid-19, announced the construction of hospitals in some districts across the country to the tune of 2 billion dollars.

But Ranking member of the Health Committee, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says the president must show his sincerity in the fight against the deadly pandemic.

According to him, Sunday’s address was nothing short of a “pure campaign”.

“Let me take this opportunity to appeal to His Excellency the president, Nana Akufo-Addo that we are in crisis and with all due respect he must not capitalize on it to try to announce his manifesto promises or rehash his manifesto promises.”

Mr. Akandoh stressed, “I think it’s rather unfortunate, at this point in time what everyone is thinking about is how to get out of the crisis”.

He noted that the country doesn’t have time on its hand in dealing with the pandemic that has already claimed 11 lives in the country after infecting 1550 as of Sunday, April 26, 2020. About 155 persons have also recovered from the disease, according to the Ghana Health Service.

Doubting the government’s ability to construct the 88 district hospitals and six regional hospitals within a year, the MP served notice that Ghanaians would not allow the president to just “throw anything at us without being scrutinized”.

He wants the president to concentrate on solving the crisis at hand.

“So for me, any measures that he announces must have direct correlation with covid-19. But he is veering into partisan political campaigning,” he observed.
