Rev. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, the founder and leader of the Glorious Word Power Ministries International, has called on Ghanaians to find a way to extend the tenure of President John Dramani Mahama beyond the constitutional limit.

According to him, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration should remain in power for an extended period due to what he describes as their commitment to humanity and national development.

Speaking to his congregation on Sunday, February 16, 2025, Owusu-Bempah urged Ghanaians not to participate in the 2028 elections and instead allow President Mahama to continue his administration.

He also suggested that if Mahama decides not to run for office again, he should be given the authority to appoint a successor to lead the country.

“What I said, the one I was serious about, concerns President Mahama, who is a good man. For that, I am serious. When you meet him, you will see he has a good heart. In fact, he is a good person.

“I wish that after his four years, he could add more years to his rule. Or, if he does not want to continue, he should be allowed to choose someone to lead the country without elections.

“The NPP should remain in opposition for a long time. For this, I am serious. If he finishes his four years and is tired, he should be allowed to select someone to continue. There should be no voting. When the election time comes, Ghanaians should declare that they will not vote, and the NDC should just continue to govern,” he said.

However, the tenure of a sitting president can only be extended through a constitutional amendment.

As it stands, Ghana’s constitution permits a president to serve a maximum of eight years in office. Since Mahama has already served a previous term, he will have only four years left to serve before stepping down, unless the constitution is amended.
