Kwahu West District Assembly Members walk out from meeting

Nkawkaw, Oct 31, GNA - Eleven out of 21 assembly members present at the second ordinary meeting of the newly created Kwahu West District Assembly at Nkawkaw, last Thursday, staged a walkout from the assembly's meeting in protest against a resolution made against the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Nana Osei Bonsu in July.

According to the resolution, a vote of no confidence had been passed and signed by 18 out of the 24 assembly members accusing the Presiding Member of abuse of office, extortion, frivolous expenditure, drunkenness, extortion and incompetence.

When the Co-ordinating Director of the Assembly, Mr Kinsgley Adjei Boahene, took a head count of the assembly members after the walk out, it was realized that the 10 members left were more than the one-third required by the standing orders of the assembly for the meeting to proceed.

Addressing the few assembly members and heads of departments, the District Chief Executive, Nana Kofi Kesse, advised them to burry their differences and co-operate.

He said the assembly had been allocated 5.3 billion cedis as its share of the District Assembly's Common Fund for the year 2005 out of which 1.847 billion cedis being the first and second quarter allocation have been received.

Nana Kese said the assembly was able to collect 662.098 million cedis from its internally generated sources as at the end of August out of the projected annual budget estimate of 936.3 million cedis representing 71 per cent.

He said in order to achieve its revenue target, the assembly had abolished the monthly hawkers license and replaced it with day tickets for all hawkers and had also introduced rates and tolls collection on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays and night revenue collectors. The District Chief Executive, Nana Kesse, said the assembly will construct two bungalows for the District Chief Executive and the Co-ordinating Director, a stabilization pond to manage liquid waste in the district.

He said the Assembly would also procure additional school furniture for basic schools in the district and build a six classroom blocks for Nsuta District Assembly Primary School.
