The Dean of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Ernest Kofi Abotsi, has criticised the entrenched positions taken by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, regarding the ongoing investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offences involving the latter.
According to him, neither Ken Ofori-Atta nor the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) stand to benefit from the current standoff.
In a post shared on his X page on Thursday, June 5, 2025, Professor Abotsi expressed dismay at what he descried as a deadlock that undermines justice and accountability.
"The ongoing Ken Ofori-Atta saga is puzzling! The posture of both sides surprises me as I see neither side winning with the approach adopted! With law affording options out of the maneuvering of parties, interrogatories could be a way out of getting his evidence and he can be tried in absentia should threshold evidence be secured and he still continues to stay outside of the jurisdiction," he wrote.
Professor Abotsi also cautioned that prolonged absence from the country could ultimately disadvantage Ken Ofori-Atta more than cooperating with the legal process.
“With the indulgence of the OSP him, the latter stands to lose more remaining outside of the jurisdiction than availing himself of the best defence at the investigative stage or trial," he added.
It is worth noting that the OSP has re-declared Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted person.
It has also initiated processes for an Interpol red notice to be issued for his arrest.
Ofori-Atta is currently under investigation for five major issues during his tenure, including contractual arrangements related to petroleum and minerals revenue assurance between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), the termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC), procurement procedures and financial transactions linked to the National Cathedral project.
