A nationwide survey conducted by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Ghana has identified formner Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the clear frontrunner in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential flagbearer race ahead of the party’s primaries scheduled for January 2026.
The survey, which sampled more than 18,000 respondents nationwide, points to strong public expectations for competent, experienced and development-oriented leadership within the governing party.
According to KAS Ghana, the study covered over 5,000 NPP delegates and more than 13,000 non-delegates, ensuring broad representation across age groups, geographical locations, religious affiliations and ethnic backgrounds. Respondents were drawn from urban, peri-urban and rural communities, with rural residents making up 41 per cent of the sample.
NPP Primaries: Bawumia stretches lead, projected to win 15 out of 16 regions in new poll
Findings from the survey show that competence ranks as the most important quality respondents expect from the next NPP flagbearer, accounting for 24.9 per cent of responses. This was followed by experience (20.3 per cent), vision (16.9 per cent), grassroots accessibility (14.1 per cent) and charisma (8.5 per cent). Identity-related factors such as age, gender, religion and ethnicity together accounted for less than one per cent.
When respondents were asked to identify political figures who best embody these leadership qualities, Dr Bawumia emerged as the preferred choice among both delegates and non-delegates. Among NPP delegates, 69.7 percent selected Dr Bawumia, compared with 22.5 percent for Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and six percent for former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong.
A similar trend was observed among non-delegates, with Dr Bawumia polling 52.9 percent, followed by Kennedy Agyapong with 31.2 percent and Dr Acheampong with 7.9 percent.
On the specific question of who is best suited to lead the party as its flagbearer, Dr Bawumia again recorded a commanding lead. He secured 67.8 percent support among delegates, compared with 21.3 percent for Kennedy Agyapong and 6.6 percent for Dr Acheampong. Among non-delegates, Dr Bawumia polled 50.6 per cent, ahead of Kennedy Agyapong’s 29.8 per cent.
KAS Ghana noted that delegates’ preferences are decisive in the contest, with the former vice president currently leading by an estimated margin of about three to one, positioning him as the overwhelming favourite if the primaries were held today.
The survey also assessed interest levels in the upcoming primaries, finding that 84.5 percent of NPP delegates are very interested in the contest, while 91.6 percent say they are likely or very likely to vote. By contrast, only 37 percent of non-delegates expressed strong interest.
KAS Ghana said the survey forms part of its broader commitment to promoting democracy, good governance and evidence-based political dialogue in Ghana.
