A former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, has weighed in on whether Kwame Baffoe Abronye’s reported attempt to seek political asylum abroad may have contributed to the denial of his bail.
Here's why Abronye could get a 4-year jail term
While visiting the CID Headquarters to meet Abronye on September 12, 2025, Dame was asked by a journalist whether the court’s decision to deny bail, after Abronye tried to seek asylum, could lead to him leaving the country and affect his case.
The journalist said these arguments were raised in court.
In response, the legal practitioner stated that seeking asylum is a right protected by law, adding that Abronye may not have fully concluded the asylum process.
“That is very spurious. I mean asylum seeking is according to law and I do not think there has been a conclusion of any such process by the gentleman. So, the question is whether indeed it is even an offence for a person to seek asylum, and whether it is also an offence for the person to make a comment that another person considers unsavory or unpalatable to that person,” he stated.
Dame further expressed the view that the incidents do not bode well for the country’s image and its democracy.
He condemned the acts, adding that such actions must neither be tolerated nor allowed to happen.

“I think all this is really putting the country in such a very poor light and as I'm saying, it's the lowest we can get to as a democracy. It should not happen at all and we should not condone it. All these excuses are very spurious and unfounded,” he added.
