The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, says although he would personally be glad if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) collapsed, such a development would be detrimental to Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Monday, August 18, 2025, he said the country needs a strong opposition party to hold the government of the day accountable and strengthen democratic governance.

“I’ll be happy if the NPP collapses; yes, I will, but is that the best for Ghana? Certainly not. We need a formidable opposition. Look at the kind of opposition we gave the NPP from 2017 to 2024; solid! That is what strengthens democracy,” he stated.

He cautioned the NPP against what he described as a ‘desperate’ strategy of putting the choice of flagbearer ahead of rebuilding party structures from the grassroots up.

According to him, political parties should first consolidate their foundation through branch, constituency, and regional executives before focusing on leadership.

“You don’t build a house by starting with the roof before the foundation. If you do that, the outcome is obvious, referencing the NPP’s current internal realignment efforts,” he said.

Tameklo also pointed to the performance of Kennedy Agyapong in the last NPP presidential primaries, noting that despite lacking establishment support, he garnered about 36 percent of the votes. In contrast, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, backed by the establishment, secured 62 percent.

He said this shows a divided base, and granting amnesty to previously suspended members might only deepen factionalism rather than unite the party.

“With this amnesty, just go on social media and see what they are doing to each other,” he said.
