Wassa-Amenfi East District Assembly assists 38 disabled persons

Wassa-Akropong(W/R), Nov. 26, GNA - Wassa-Amenfi East District Assembly in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare have presented items and cash worth 100 million cedis to 38 disabled persons in the district at Wassa-Akropong.

The recipients were presented with wheelchairs, sewing machines, hairdressing and spraying machines and cash ranging between one million and three million cedis.

The assistance was to enable some of them continue their education; others to learn skills in some trades, some to establish their own businesses while some would undergo surgery. Madam Doris Gyapomaah Oduro, Wassa-Amenfi East District Chief Executive presenting the items and cash to them, and said People Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) could become partners in national development when supported, resourced and motivated.

She said it was in line with this that Government showed goodwill and commitment to the cause of PLWDs by promulgating the Disability Act. "With the Disability Act now in place, PLWDs are assured of their fair share of the national cake," she added. Madam Oduro urged the beneficiaries to utilise the package to improve their living standards.

Mr Gideon Sagoe, Wassa-Amenfi East District Social Welfare Officer, said the Department registered about 184 persons living with different forms of disabilities in the district by the end of September this year.

Mr Sagoe called for change in societal attitude towards PLWDs to integrate them into society. Mr Daniel Boye Manu, Wassa-Amenfi East District Chairman of Association for the Disabled, commended Government for the Disability Act and pledged that the items and cash presented to them would be well utilised.
