"Help solve Akwatia NPP crisis" - group appeals

Akwatia, June 25, GNA - A group calling itself "Concerned New Patriotic Party (NPP)" on Wednesday appealed to the National and Eastern Regional Executive of the NPP to resolve the "deepening crisis" within the party in the Akwatia constituency, particularly in Akwatia town. The group said unless urgent steps were taken to arrest the deterioration and the dwindling of the image and strength of the party at Akwatia, the party stood the danger of a permanent split in the constituency.

Addressing a press conference at Akwatia Mr Edward Ntow Apeadu, spokesman of the group, said it had already sent a petition to the National Chairman of the Party, Mr Peter Mac Manu spelling out their grievances.

He said aside from the constituency executive openly campaigning for and supporting Dr Kofi Asare to win the recent primary contrary to the rules of the election as embodied in the guidelines for contesting as a Parliamentary candidate of the NPP, it had come to the notice of the group that Dr Asare was not a registered member of the party in the constituency.

Dr Asare, he alleged, did not even have a valid party card. Mr Apeadu, a former constituency secretary, said Dr Asare was not a known registered voter in the constituency and wondered how he should have been treated as a special case and be helped to win the primary.
