A leading member of the New Patriotic Party and former Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has welcomed the party’s decision to elect its flagbearer in January 2026, describing it as good move.
In a lengthy statement on his Facebook page on June 19, 2025, Akomea stated that holding the presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, is in the best interest of the party.
He further noted that unity in the party can only be achieved once a flagbearer has been chosen to lead the NPP.
“The decision was arrived at after the NPP National Council by an overwhelming majority agreed to hold the flagbearer elections first and quickly, is just what the NPP needs at this time.
“The party will never close ranks in unity until the flagbearer election is over. That is fact,” his post read.
Commenting further, Nana Akomea, who is aligned with the Dr Mahamudu Bawumia camp, noted that there has always been an ongoing conversation within the party about who should be elected as flagbearer.
He acknowledged the presence of minor rivalries, with some aspirants even going as far as fueling religious bias.
He added that the party’s recent “Thank You” tour was nearly disrupted due to tensions surrounding the flagbearer race.
“In the past few months in opposition, the dominant news about the party have been about the flagbearership. Either some aspirant is stoking up religious bias, or setting up some exploratory committee etc etc, Even the normal ‘Thank You tour’ was nearly disrupted over flagbearer rivalry,” he said.
Citing Chairman Wontumi’s case as an instance, Akomea said that, “Even bail for a detained regional chairman was believed to have been influenced by flagbearer rivalry. This flagbearer rivalry would divide the ranks of the party from polling station elections right up to the national executive elections.”
