Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Armah Blay, says the party’s recent political setbacks are not due to poor governance under former President Akufo-Addo but rather frustration and apathy among grassroot members.

Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews on July 16, 2025, Blay stated that while the Akufo-Addo-led administration performed well across various sectors, the party failed to maintain strong connections with its support base.

“Maybe the only thing we failed to do was to carry along our membership, a greater portion of our members for that matter. So, some of them got quite frustrated, and therefore refused to go and vote,” he said.

He rejected claims that the NPP government underperformed, insisting that it made significant progress in economic management, infrastructure development, and institutional strengthening.

“In terms of performance, and I’m being very sincere with you, I think the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government did very well,” he said.

Blay highlighted building of hospitals, expanding educational facilities, and reinforcing political and security institutions as achievements of the previous government; describing them as evidence of the administration’s success.

“In terms of handling the economy, building infrastructure, building institutions in this country, both political and security institutions, hospitals and education; I think the previous NPP government did very well,” he emphasised.

He also referred to what he called unprecedented efforts in job creation, stating that in terms of employment in the history of this country, the Akufo-Addo government did extremely well.
