Few women to contest assembly elections

Akyem Oda (E/R), Aug. 11, GNA - Out of 163 contestants, who have filed their nominations for the 54 seats in the Birim South District Assembly, only 17 are women.

Mr John Appiah Baffoe, the District Electoral Officer told the Ghana News Agency that one of the candidates has an MBA qualification with some of them holding diploma and Middle School Leaving Certificates (MLSC).

On the Unit Committees, he said 751 people would contest the 157 units in the district.

Mr Baffoe said out of that figure, 109 of them are females. He said the nominations went on smoothly and he hoped the peaceful situation would permeate through to the election. The District Electoral Officer appealed to eligible voters to come out in their numbers to vote for candidates, who would be able to deliver to help improve upon living conditions in their areas.
