The Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako Marfo, has alleged that the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, had planned to resign from Parliament due to frustration and fatigue.
According to Nimako, who was part of the late MP's legal team, Kumi passed away just six days after expressing his intention to vacate his seat in Parliament.
"He told me he wanted to resign from Parliament. He said he was tired because of the harassment he was facing in the constituency. He wanted to resign and stay home.
"…Six days after expressing his desire to resign, he died," Nimako revealed during a panel discussion on Joy News on September 2, 2025.
Ernest Yaw Kumi, the sitting NPP MP for Akwatia, passed away on July 7, 2025, after a short illness.
Kumi made headlines after being cited for contempt by the Koforidua High Court on February 19, 2025, for defying an interim injunction that barred him from being sworn in as an MP on the Minority side of Parliament.
A bench warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest after he failed to appear before the court for sentencing.

Presiding judge Justice Senyo Amedahe ruled that the MP had consistently failed to attend court proceedings, dismissing a letter from the Minority Caucus which claimed Kumi's parliamentary duties prevented his attendance.
However, on June 11, 2025, the Supreme Court, in a 4-1 majority decision, overturned the conviction after Kumi filed an application to set aside the contempt ruling.
The apex court also quashed the interim injunction that barred him from acting as the elected representative of Akwatia and upheld his request to prevent Justice Amedahe from proceeding with sentencing.
