A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communications Team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has condemned attempts by some individuals within the party to introduce tribal and religious sentiments into the NPP internal contest for the 2028 presidential primary.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, Daaku described the trend as troubling, stressing that tribal sentiments consistently resurface during elections, whether internal or national.

“It is interesting that tribalism always rears its head during election, be it internal party elections, district assembly elections, or national elections. However, when it comes to nation-building, we hardly hear about it. So, those NPP supporters who have suddenly raised questions about Dr Bawumia’s tribe, why didn’t they do so in 2012, during the election petition hearing?” she questioned.
Daaku urged party members to be measured in their public commentary, stressing that tribal politics must be condemned.
'I will restore fairness through NPJ' - NPP flagbearer hopeful Kwabena Agyepong
“As a party, we need to be guided in our utterances. Tribal politics must be condemned. If the person is capable of leading the country, his tribe should not be a hindrance. We all know John Dramani Mahama will not run again, so as we anticipate what will happen, let’s also see how the NDC will handle it,” she added.
Her remarks come in the wake of a viral video featuring NPP flagbearer hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong, who urged delegates to reject the former Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia as a candidate for the 2028 elections.
Dr Acheampong argued that the NPP lost votes in the 2024 polls due to Bawumia’s Mamprusi background, claiming that the Kusasi people, who have a long-standing conflict with the Mamprusi withheld their support from the party as a result.
Meanwhile, Dr Acheampong has clarified that his comments were misrepresented.
According to him, his submission was about the challenges facing the party and its choice of candidates, not about ethnicity.
The NPP has scheduled its presidential primary for January 31, 2026.
