Eligible voters queue to register in Ho Municipality

Ho, Aug.1, GNA - Many people in the Ho Municipality who turned 18 years and above since the last registration exercise in 2004, are taking advantage of the current registration exercise to put their names in the voter's register for future elections.

Long queues had formed at six registration centres visited by the Ghana News Agency on Friday, the second day of the 11-day exercise. In the queues were many people aged above 18 years, who, according to them, either travelled abroad, or fell ill during the last registration.

Some of them complained about the lack of adequate centres, saying they had to travel long distances to register. They held that the situation could discourage people from registering and wished the centres could be increased. Mr Johnson Akafia, Ho Municipal Officer of the Electoral Commission, explained that only 22 sets of registration equipment were allocated to the area, which has 43 registration centres. It therefore became necessary to zone the municipality into fewer centres, he said, adding that mobile registration stations were also put in place in the rural areas.
