Electorate Vow To Vote In Awutu/Senya In 2008 Polls

Awutu-Bontrase (C/R), Oct. 28, GNA-Qualified voters in and around Awutu Bontrase area of the Central Region have vowed to exercise their franchise in Awutu/Senya electoral area come next year's general elections.

Hitherto, voters in the area had been made to vote for candidates who contested Agona East seat during general elections.

This was made possible as a result of Traditional Land Boundary issue which automatically carved Awutu-Bontrase, Awutu-Akrabong, Awutu Kojo-Ashong, Awutu-Kwamekei, Awutu-asubu and others into the electoral map of the Agona-East electoral area.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Awutu-Bontrase, the people made it clear that come next year, they would not comply with that procedure anymore because they considered the action of the Electoral Commission as unfair and totally unacceptable. They further explained that the area falls under the administrative powers of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District, and saw no reason why they should be compelled the Electoral Commission to cast their votes in an electoral community which falls directly under another administrative set-up.

Affected electorate resident in the communities mentioned have therefore appealed to the Electoral Commission to start initiating measures to rectify the situation before next year's Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

They vowed that if the necessary steps were not taken now to resolve the issue, they would be compelled to vote for candidates they prefer in the Awutu/Senya Constituency on the polling day without fear. The electorate further contended that they perceived the previous actions of the Electoral Commission as an infringement on their freedom and voting rights.
