Election of DCE's is unconstitutional - Barima

Begoro, April 29, GNA - Mr Yaw Barima, the Eastern Regional Minister, has said the 1992 Constitution had no provision for the election of district chief executives.

Reacting to a question at the People's Assembly at Begoro, Mr Barimah said the present system of appointing district chief executives "is constitutionally mandated and to elect them is unconstitutional." Mr Barima told a questioner that the government could not revert to the old price control but could only negotiate with companies for a reasonable pricing of goods.

Mrs Ewurabena Ahwoi, the Regional Director of Education, called on chiefs, assembly members and the public to help arrest the upsurge of indiscipline among the youth.

She appealed to the district assemblies to enact byelaws to prevent school children, especially, teenagers from attending video shows and roaming on the streets at night.

Dr E. Appiah-Denkyira, the Regional Director of Health Services, said pharmacists would play a major role in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by supplying drugs to patients free of charge and collecting the bill from the District NHIS.
