EC to hold elections in Tamale, Yendi Districts

Accra, July 7, GNA - The Electoral Commission (EC) announced on Thursday that it would hold elections in all units, electoral areas in the Tamale Metropolis and Yendi District on August 11, 2005.

A statement signed by Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, Chairman of EC, said reopening of nomination of candidates should take place at the offices of returning officers in the two districts on July 21 and 22 between 0800 hours and 1200 hours and 1400 hours and 1700 hours.

It said all persons who initially filed their nominations to contest the elections in the affected areas were to confirm their participation or otherwise. The elections were postponed because of the state of emergency that was in force in both areas at the time the elections were held countrywide.

The statement said each candidate shall be nominated on a separate nomination form and every nomination shall be proposed, seconded and supported by 18 registered voters for the Metropolitan and District election and eight registered voters for Unit Committee elections. It said the consent of the candidate should be endorsed thereon.

The statement said nomination forms would be made available free of charge from the office of the Returning Officer for the areas concerned or the Office of the District Electoral Officer.

Candidates are required to present two clear and recent postcard sized photographs (bust) in black and white of themselves when delivering their nomination forms to returning officers.
