EC registers 186,646 potential voters in Eastern Region

Koforidua, Aug. 26, GNA - A total of 186,646 young people were registered in the Eastern Region at the end of the just ended voter's registration exercise. Out of the number 775 were challenged on the grounds of being minors, aliens or not residents of the respective electoral areas, with Asuogyaman District recording the highest of 325 challenges. It was followed by West Akim 139, Kwaebibirem 79, East Akyem and Kwahu South 49 each and Suhum Kraboa Coaltar 40. The rest were Manya Krobo 28, Yilo Krobo two, Akuapem North 17, Atiwa 10, Akuapem South 15, Birim South nine, Birim North two, Fanteakwa four and Kwahu West four.

The Eastern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Paul Boateng, who disclosed this in an interview with GNA, said district review committees had been set up in all the districts to commence investigations into the cases.

He said after giving a fair hearing to people whose registration had been challenged, voter ID cards would be issued to those cleared by the committees.

According to Mr Boateng, the committees were made up of representatives of the various political parties, EC, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ghana Police Service. 26 Aug. 08
