EC registers 17,433 persons in Obuasi

Obuasi, Sept 8, GNA - A total of 17,433 persons have been registered in the Obuasi Municipality, in the just ended voters' registration exercise, organised by the Electoral Commission, (EC). Out of the number, 9,085 had their photo identity cards and 8,357 would receive theirs from 12 to 16 of this month. Mr Francis Addai-Boateng, the Municipal Director of EC, disclosed these in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Obuasi at the weekend.

He said the exercise was meant for those who had attained 18 and 19 years but "we ended up registering more of those in 20 years bracket and above," adding that 5,724 were 18 years old, 3,814 were 19 years old and those 20 years and above were 7,904. Mr Addai-Boateng said the registration of 18 persons had been challenged and a District Registration Review Committee, under the chairmanship of Mr Joseph Kwame Appiah, had been constituted to investigate the matter.

He said the exercise was hectic because of misunderstanding between agents of political parties concerning the eligibility of some people to register. On the replacement of lost voters' identity cards, Mr Addai-Boateng said 3,508 cards had been issued and 700 cards were being processed.
