EC Releases Finals results

The Electoral Commission (EC) has released the final results of this year?s presidential and parliamentary elections.

In all, President J.A. Kufuor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who won the presidential election, polled 4,524,074, representing 52.45 per cent, while his closest rival, Prof. J.A. Mills of the National Democratic congress (NDC), received 3,850,368, representing 44.64 per cent.

The total votes cast were 8,813,908, while a total of 188,123 were declared invalid, representing 2.13 per cent of the votes cast.

In an interview, the Director of Election of the EC, Mr. Albert Kofi Arhin, said with the final results out, his outfit would gazette them.

He said within 21 days after the publication any aggrieved party member, candidate, individual or group could go to court on any aspect of the results.

In the parliamentary elections, the NPP had 128 seats, the NDC secured 94 seats, the People?s National Convention (PNC) four, the Convention People?s Party (CPP) three, with one independent candidate in the 230 member Parliament.

When the EC declared the provisional results on December 9, 2004, President Kufuor was said at that time to have polled 4,463,731 votes, representing 52.75 per cent of the 8,615,306 total valid votes cast to secure another mandate of four years.

President Kufuor?s closest challenger, Prof. Mills of the NDC, had secured 3,750,830 votes, accounting for 44.32 per cent of the valid votes cast.

Dr. Edward Mahama of the PNC polled 163,648 votes, representing 1.93 per cent, while Mr. George Aggudey of the CPP had 84,501 votes, representing 1, 00 per cent.

Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan said the results represented certified ballots from 225 out of the 230 constituencies because, by then, the results from Bia in the Western Region, Tolon, Tapei Kusawgu and Zabzugu Tatale in the Northern Region and Pru in Brong Ahafo were yet to be certified.

In the final results, Dr. Mahama of the PNC had 165,375, representing 1.92 per cent, with Mr. Aggudey of the CPP obtaining 85,969, representing one per cent.
