EC Considers Electronic Voting

The Electoral Commission (EC) says it is considering the possibility of introducing electronic voting into the country?s electoral process.

Mr Daniel Kanga, deputy chairman of the EC in charge of finance and administration, explained that even though the commission is aware of the technology it is still weighing the risk and advantage factors in adopting such a technology.

Electronic voting enables voters to cast their ballot with the aid of an electronic gadget. Although it is faster and neater than the manual procedure, it is said to be expensive to operate.

Mr Kanga was speaking at the opening of a two-day conference to review the 2004 general election in Accra yesterday.

The conference was organised by the Department of Political Science of the University of Ghana, Legon, with sponsorship from the Royal Danish Embassy. It is aimed at assessing the strengths and weaknesses identified in the last elections and suggest ways of improving future elections.
