New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate for the 2024 presidential election, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has defended a claim he made in the run-up to the election that the 24-Hour Economy policy proposal of the NDC was not possible because ‘even God sleeps at night.’
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on November 24, 2025, NAPO said that the statement he made was a fact but he was chastised for making it.
He explained that Christians believe Jesus is God, and it was recorded in the Bible that Jesus slept, which makes his assertion valid.
“People ridiculed me when I said God sleeps. But if you are a Christian and you believe in the Bible and you know the Trinity… then you know that God made himself manifest and came to live amongst us for 33 years, through a divine birth.
“And it was the same Bible that said when there was a storm, and the apostles went to Jesus, he was fast asleep. Tell me, was Christ not God?” he is quoted to have said in a news card by JoyNews from the interview.
‘There is no country in the world where people work for 24 hours; even God sleeps at night’ - NAPO
What NAPO said:
NAPO took a swipe at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over its major campaign policy for the 2024 poll, the 24-Hour Economy proposal.
Speaking at a campaign event in Accra on September 24, 2024, NAPO asserted that the NDC’s 24-Hour Economy policy is impossible.
He claimed that there is no country in the world where people work for 24 hours.
The 2024 NPP running mate indicated that people have to rest after work because even God, who created the universe, rests.
“It is not possible. There is no country in the world where people work for 24 hours; even God, who created the world, rests at night,” NAPO, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, said in Twi.
