Despite Kufuor’s good governance, he couldn't 'Break the 8’, let alone Akufo-Addo – NDC MP

Ahmed Ibrahim Ahmed Ibrahim

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ahmed Ibrahim, expressed scepticism about the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) ability to "break the 8" under the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Ibrahim who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Banda compared Akufo-Addo's administration unfavourably with that of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, whose government, according to him, was better more successful but still failed to secure a third term for the NPP.

He implied that if Kufuor's commendable administration could not achieve this feat, it would be even more challenging for Akufo-Addo, whose tenure he deemed a failure.

“Where the man has reached, he is going into opposition, so for someone who is going into opposition, he will always find excuses for things,” Ibrahim stated, suggesting that Akufo-Addo's recent actions, including a letter warning the minority not to transmit the LGBT+ bill to the president, were indicative of a leader on the defensive as he approaches the end of his term.

When the host interjected, noting that Akufo-Addo was not heading into opposition but was rather concluding his two-term presidency, Ibrahim reiterated his point.

“Even with Kufuor, who had a better government and administration, he couldn’t break the eight," he stressed.

The NPP aims to "break the eight" with their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has promised to ensure that Dr. Bawumia succeeds him as president, stating he is not ready to hand over power to NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, whom he has defeated twice in elections.

The 2024 elections are set to be a fierce battle between John Mahama and Bawumia as the main contenders, even though the Alan Kyerematen Movement for Change will also vie for the presidency alongside Nana Kwame Bediako, who represents The New Force.
