ECOWAS leaders urged to take a cue from the EU

President John Agyekum Kufuor on Thursday called on West African leaders to take a cue from their counterparts in Europe that formed the European Union (EU) and make the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) a viable organization.

He said while Europe was enjoying a stable form of unity under the EU the situation in West Africa was different.

President Kufuor made the call when Mr Gregorg Walinski, Polish Ambassador in Ghana presented his Letters of Credence at the Castle, Osu.

He said since both entities were geared towards the economic emancipation of their various countries, the situation in West Africa should not be different from Europe.

President Kufuor said he was optimistic that Poland after joining the EU would take advantage of the opportunities being offered to make a positive change in its socio-economic development.

Mr Walinski said with the participation of Poland in the EU it would broaden the framework of the activities of the Union and create an avenue for Poland to deal favourably with other friendly countries.

He said Ghana had always been an important, reliable, honest and an open country to Poland.
