Citing of District Capital is for development- Andoh

The citing of a district capital in a particular community does not affect paramountcies, Mr. Joseph Foster Andoh, the District Chief Executive of Twifo-Hemang- Lower-Denkyira, has said.

Speaking at an assembly meeting, he said revenues collected are also not meant for the development of a particular community or the district capital, adding that the separation of the district would speed up the development of the area and urged the people to support it.

Mr. Andoh said the Assembly’s concept was non-partisan and advised the assembly members not to allow themselves to be drawn into ethnic and political sentiments because “Assembly Members are mandated to serve the people in their respective areas”.

He expressed concern over the illegal gold mining in the Pra River which is destroying the river, the source of drinking water for the majority of people in the area, and appealed to the Assembly to come out with suggestions to surmount the canker once and for all.

On revenue, Mr. Andoh said the Assembly was most likely to meet its 2012 revenue target since it had collected GH¢150,513.48 at the end of the first quarter of this year, as against GH¢407,970.00 projected for 2012.

He said the Government has so far paid a total of GH¢122,660.00 to 817 households in 26 communities in the district under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP).

The Common Fund Secretariat has also released GH¢93,867.13 as at the end of the third quarter of 2011 to support people with disability in the District which the Disability Management Committee has so far distributed to 111 people.

On education, it had been projected that more schools being built under the School Under Tree Project would be completed. Seventeen schools in the District are now benefiting from the School Feeding Programme which is covering about 4,145 pupils, also 7,670 school uniforms have been distributed so far with more yet to come.

A total of 28,698 pupils have also benefited from the distribution of free exercise books whilst 40 schools in the district have so far benefited from the distribution of dual desks, he added.

Mr. Andoh later distributed 65 motorbikes to 65 members of the Assembly to facilitate their movement within the electoral area.**
