A baby burnt at Asante-Mampong

Mampong (Ash), April 19, GNA -- The sight of a two-month-old baby, Stephen Kofi, drew tears from a large crowd of people at Abrukutoase, a suburb of Asante-Mampong, when his charred body was removed from a quenched fire last Sunday.

He was rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, where he was pronounced dead. He has since been buried at Mampong. Personal property of the deceased's parents running into million of cedis was completely burnt in a fire outbreak.

The mother of the deceased, Madam Akua Bemah, narrating the story to the GNA, said she left the deceased baby and her two-year-old son, Kwame in the room while she was washing in front of the house.

She said during the washing, she observed her son rushing out of the room panicking. She said she became alarmed by the situation and followed up to the room only to find smoke engulfing the room.

Madam Bemah added that she shouted for help which attracted neighbours to the scene. "It took over half-an-hour for the fire to be quenched after which my baby was brought out charred", she sobbed. The source of the fire is not immediately known.
