Renowned Ghanaian business mogul Sam Jonah has praised President John Dramani Mahama for publicly declaring that he would not contest the presidency for a third term.
Speaking in a recent interview on Starr FM, Sam Jonah said he was not surprised by John Mahama’s declaration, noting that he knew the president would give no credence to calls for the 1992 Constitution to be amended to allow him to run for a third term.
He described the calls for an extension of President Mahama’s term of office as “nonsense,” adding that the president’s clear statement that he won’t run for the presidency again, just a few months into his government, is commendable, especially considering political developments in several African countries.
“Look around you in Africa. I was recently in Cameroon; the president is 92 years old and is standing for re-election. In Côte d'Ivoire, they have changed the constitution so he can stand again. There are so many such examples in Africa.
“President Mahama has been in office for less than a year. Within the first three months, there were cries for the Constitution to be changed so he carries on,” Jonah, who is also the Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, said.

He added, “The President Mahama that I know — a very humble man, very modest and brilliant, of course. The man that I know would not countenance that.”
Sam Jonah pointed out that he felt the need to speak on the matter to ensure that the president, whom he knows so well, would not entertain the calls.
“So, I felt it was important for some of us to say, we know you won’t do that — don’t even dream about it. The man that I know would not countenance that kind of nonsense, which is exactly what it is,” he reiterated.
