Heightened Security At US Installations In Ghana

Security has been heightened at all American installations in Ghana. Extra police officers and private security personnel are manning installations like the Main Embassy, the Consular Section and the US Information Service. Vehicles owners are being asked to park about 100 metres away from the buildings. Body checks are also being conducted to ensure that people do not enter the installations with knives, blades and other weapons.

Cameras, cellular phones and even radio sets are not being allowed in the embassy building. The heightened security follows the commencement of military action against Afghanistan’s Taleban Movement for their failure to hand over suspected terrorist, Osama bin Laden. The US government has warned American citizens across the world to be extra security-conscious and limit their movements.

Here in Ghana, American envoys are not working today, apparently because of the celebration of Colombus Day in the US. Some American citizens who were spotted at the embassy in Accra expressed surprise that the officials were not working.
