Ashanti CPP condemns attack on its presidential aspirant

Kumasi, Nov. 14, GNA - The CPP in Ashanti has condemned the recent pelting with stones on the convoy of Dr Kwaku Osafo, one of its presidential aspirants, at Asante Mampong, during a campaign tour in the town.

In a statement signed by Mr Akwasi Bosompem Boateng, Ashanti Regional Secretary of the party and issued in Kumasi on Wednesday, described the act as shameful and immature.

"It is unfortunate that at this moment of Ghana's democracy, people who have their own choices, opinions, preferences and agenda will resort to physical attacks of this nature", it wondered.

Dr Osafo's convoy was said to have been attacked with stones by unknown persons at Asante Mampong on October 18th, this year, after meeting with constituency delegates, resulting in the damage of one of his vehicles, but the occupants however, escaped unscathed.

The case was reported to the Asante Mampong police but it is yet to make any arrest.

According to the CPP, the assault was an attack on democracy and urged the police to carry out detailed investigations into the incident and bring the perpetrators to book to serve as a deterrent to others who might be thinking of attacking important and innocent citizens of the country.

The statement also denied that the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party has recommended Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor as the suitable presidential candidate for the NPP in the 2008 elections.

According to the statement, neither the regional leadership nor the chairman had asked people to vote for Dr Addo Kufuor or any of the presidential hopefuls both within and outside the CPP on any platform and urged the public to treat the rumour with the contempt it deserved. "The CPP and NPP are ideologically opposed. Therefore, it will be disastrous for any true Nkrumaist to recommend any of the NPP candidates to win political power, just to continue their selfish capitalist policies that have already inflicted pain, hardship and poverty on the ordinary Ghanaians on our streets and rural areas", it emphasised. The statement said the rumour was a calculated attempt by a group of people to involve the CPP in the internal affairs of the NPP and pleaded with the media to be very objective and exercise adequate professionalism in their reportage to the public and stop making personal conclusions on non-existing issues. 14 Nov. 07
