Asante-Akim South district assembly confirms DCE

Juaso (Ash), July 21, GNA - The Asante-Akim South District Assembly on Thursday confirmed the President's nominee for the post of District Chief Executive (DCE) Dr Lord Justice Gyamfi-Fenteng polled 44 out of the 51 votes cast representing 86.2 per cent of the total votes cast. This put to rest months of controversies surrounding the nomination and confirmation of Dr Gyamfi-Fenteng.

Prior to Dr Gyamfi-Fenteng's nomination, some youth groups in the district held a press conference petitioning the President not to re-nominate him or risked losing the next general election in the district.

The petition, which contained several allegations of impropriety levelled against the DCE was however, ignored as the President went ahead to re-nominate Dr Gyamfi-Fenteng.

In view of the situation, Thursday's voting was characterised by extreme uneasiness, as the outcome of the voting was almost unpredictable.

However, the hall was thrown into wild jubilation immediately the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr Samuel Yorke-Aidoo declared the results.

Speaking after his confirmation, the DCE called for unity to move the district forward.

Mr Sampson Kwaku Boafo, Ashanti Regional Minister, urged the DCE and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante-Akim South, Mrs Gifty Ohene Konadu to peacefully work together in order to erase the erroneous impression that they are at loggerheads.
