Asante-Akim South NPP retain Gifty Ohene Konadu

Juaso (Ash), May 19, GNA- Mrs Gifty Ohene-Konadu, Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante-Akim South, was on Sunday re-elected to represent the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the forthcoming parliamentary elections at its primaries held at Juaso.

She polled 100 votes to beat her only challenger, Mr Alexander Kwaku Korankye, a former MP, who had 21 votes.

The election which was held a day after a court injunction placed on it elapsed, was held under tight security.

It would be recalled that Mr Kwabena Nketiah Sakyi, a Kumasi-based businessman, who was disqualified from contesting the primaries, sought a court injunction to restrain the party from holding the primaries originally scheduled for May 9.

The court which on Friday held the argument of the two parties adjourned the case to May 21 for ruling paving way for the primaries to be held after the injunction elapsed on Saturday. The announcement of Mrs Ohene-Konadu as the winner of the election by Mr Joseph Appiagyei, the District Director of Electoral Commission was greeted with wild jubilation by her supporters. Mrs Ohene-Konadu, who is also the Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and President's Special Initiatives, thanked the delegates for renewing her mandate and called for unity to ensure total victory for the party in the December elections.
