Asante-Akim North District registers 4,325 voters

Konongo-Ashanti, June 18, GNA - About 4,325 voters registered in the Asante-Akim North district during the re-opening of the voters' register nation-wide.

The figure represents 89 per cent of the total projection of 5,200 people envisaged to be registered during the exercise. About 100 people who could not take their photographs during the 2004 general elections were also offered the opportunity to complete their registration.

Mr Mensah Boateng, Asante-Akim North District Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), who disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency at Konongo at the weekend, said the exercise was incident-free, describing "it as successful."

He said only four people had their registration challenged on grounds of non-citizenship at Brentuokrom, but all of them including those who challenged them failed to appear before the District Registration Review Committee.

Mr Boateng said the Commission had served them with notices for the last time to appear before the committee or their registration would be nullified.

He said the voters' register would soon be exhibited and urged voters to ensure their names were in the register to be eligible to vote in the forthcoming district level elections. 18 June 06
