Akyem Oda NDC Executives support Ms Koomson as MCE

Koforidua, April 12 GNA- A majority of the Akyem Oda Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on Sunday said they supported Ms Ophelia Koomson, current second vice-chairperson of the constituency, to be nominated as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central.

In a petition to President John Evans Attah-Mills, the executive said they were reliably informed that Ms Koomson had been nominated for that position but a few people were trying to sabotage her. The petition, which was signed by Mr Anane Boateng, Constituency chairman, said Ms Koomson is a hardworking and dedicated person who could move the developmental agenda of the Municipality forward if given the nod.

Ms Koomson, who is a teacher by profession holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BED) in Social Studies from the University of Education Winneba (UEW).

She was an elected assembly member to the then Birim South District Assembly (BSDA) from 1989-1992, Government appointee to the assembly from 1992 to 1996, Finance and Administration sub-committee secretary, BSDA from 1992-1996, a member of the complaints and emoluments of the assembly from 1992-1996. The petition said Ms Koomson was also the chairperson for the Area and Town Council Committee and Finance and Administration, BSDA from 1996-2000.

"She was the branch chairperson, NDC from 1992-2008 and constituency treasurer from 2000-2004". The petition said Ms Koomson appointment as the MCE for Birim Central would be in line with the President's vision of giving 40 percent of appointments in his government to women. The petition said so far 18 names nominated for the position of District/MCE in the Eastern Region did not include any woman. "We therefore, once again appeal to the President to give the Birim Central MCE post to Ms. Koomson". Signatories to the petition include Alhaji Yusif, Constituency 0rganizer, B.B. Frempong, Youth Organizer, Kwame Seth, Deputy Youth organizer, Madam Abiba J.J. Second Women Organizer and Miss Abena Nyarkoa, Treasurer, among others.
