Akwatia peace pact in limbo as NDC, NPP refuse to sign

The major contenders in the Akwatia by-election, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), have refused to sign a peace pact organised by the National Peace Council.

The inability of either party to sign the pact followed concerns raised by the NPP's National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, about the composition of the NDC's team.

He noted that while the NPP presented its national executives to sign the pact, the NDC paraded constituency executives, which, he argued, showed a lack of commitment to the pact.

Speaking to the media on September 1, 2025, after the stalled process, Nana Boakye indicated that the NPP was ready to sign but only if the NDC presented national executives to represent the party.

The disagreement emerged at a meeting scheduled at the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Akwatia, where both parties were expected to sign the pact.

However, a Board member of the Peace Council, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, assured that the Council remains committed to facilitating the peace pact before the polls today, September 2, 2025.

"The two parties were represented, but there were some issues of concern that needed to be resolved. And in the spirit of mutual dialogue and mutual respect, both parties agreed that we should suspend the meeting," he told the media.

The Akwatia by-election, necessitated by the untimely demise of former MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, will be held across the constituency.

Ahead of the elections, the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 1,000 personnel and equipment to the constituency to protect lives and property and ensure a peaceful election.
