The First Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, has draped the seat of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, in red cloth as a solemn tribute following his passing on Monday, July 7, 2025.
Ernest Kumi, a first-time MP elected on the ticket of the NPP, had recently emerged from a high-profile legal battle over the legitimacy of his election.
His sudden passing comes just weeks after the Supreme Court overturned his contempt conviction related to the disputed 2024 parliamentary election results.
In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found him guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction that barred him from presenting himself for swearing-in.
A bench warrant was subsequently issued for his arrest after he repeatedly failed to attend court hearings and allegedly disregarded judicial authority.
His passing brings an abrupt end to a turbulent yet determined political journey, leaving the Akwatia seat vacant once again.
