The much-anticipated by-election in Akwatia has officially kicked off, as constituents cast their ballots in the keenly contested race to elect their parliamentary representative.

The polls which began at 7am on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, is expected to end at 5pm on the same day.

The Electoral Commission (EC) began distributing ballot boxes, polling booths and other electoral materials to polling centres across the Akwatia Constituency as early as 5:30am today, September 2, 2025.

The polls will see the election of a new Member of Parliament for Akwatia following the demise of the sitting MP, Ernest Kumi.

More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the by-election, which has drawn national attention due to a major political showdown between Ghana's two leading political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as well as an independent candidate.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo is contesting on the ticket of the NDC, while the NPP's candidate is Solomon Kwame Asumadu.
