Agona West NPP settles conflict

Agona Swedru, June 17, GNA - The protracted political conflict that hit the Agona West Constituency branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the past two-and-half years has been resolved.

This has paved way for the swearing into office of a 10-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to steer affairs of the party. The settlement followed withdrawal of the case pending before Agona Swedru High Court last week by Mr. Samuel Kweku Idan, a former financial secretary of the constituency.

The IMC under the chairmanship of Mr Adofo Dwamena with Debrah Lamptey as the secretary would stay in office for two months to prepare for the election of substantive constituency executives. Other members of the IMC are Mr Ibrahim Yahaya, Ibrahim Mohammed, Nana Kofi Eku, Mr Jeff Neil, Mrs. Hanna Eyeson, Miss Evelyn Duodu, Mr Michael Akoto and Bafour Awuah. Mr Kwamena Duncan, Central Regional Secretary of the party, swore the members into Office.

Mr Idan filed a suit at Agona Swedru High Court in 2005 challenging the legality of suspension of the constituency executives from office by the Central Region branch of the party.

Mr Idan prayed the court to reinstate the executives since their suspension did not conform to the NPP constitution. Speaking to the press after the swearing-in ceremony, Mr Ben Mensah, the District Chief Executive for Agona, said the reconciliation of the three factions would go a long way to strengthen the party for the 2008 elections.

He called on the party functionaries to bury their political differences to ensure peace and stability in order to win more supporters for the party. 17 June 07
