The Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has called on Ghanaians to urgently consider and adopt the vision of Ghana's first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as a blueprint for national development.
He noted that Nkrumah’s plan aimed at building self-sufficiency and raising living standards across all sectors, making it vital for Ghana’s development today.
Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who is also the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, made this call while addressing a gathering as part of activities to commemorate the 116th birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The week-long celebration dubbed NkrumahFest 2025, which is currently underway in his hometown of Nkroful in the Western Region, is on the theme: "Celebrating Nkrumah's Enduring Impact".
NkrumahFest 2025: Leaders call for action on Nkrumah’s legacy
Addressing the crowd at the event, Armah-Kofi Buah emphasised that "Ghanaians must move beyond simply honouring Nkrumah's memory and instead embody his legacy through action—particularly by joining the fight against illegal mining".
Armah-Kofi Buah's call is among several others who have argued for embracing Nkrumah's vision as a blueprint for national development, emphasising economic self-sufficiency, industrialisation, and Pan-African unity.
Key aspects of Dr Nkrumah's blueprint, which could be the catalyst for the nation's rapid economic transformation, include his proposed Seven-Year Development Plan.
Dr Nkrumah's plan aimed to establish a strong and progressive society where poverty, illiteracy, and diseases would be eradicated, emphasising modernised agriculture and expanding industrial growth.
On economic empowerment, Dr Nkrumah believed that true independence could only be achieved through economic empowerment and national unity - a vision that remains relevant today, especially considering Ghana's current economic challenges.
Dr Nkrumah envisioned a Ghana that was economically independent and politically sovereign, and focused on uplifting every Ghanaian. This prospect is arguably needed now as the country strives for economic empowerment and absolute freedom through unity.
