About 141,351 eligible voters registered in Central Region

Cape Coast, Aug. 19, GNA - Mr Samuel Tettey, Central Regional Director of Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday said about 141,351 eligible voters registered during the limited voters registration exercise in the Region.

He said about 35,962 of them could not take their photographs, and gave the assurance that the EC would soon announce a period for the taking of photographs and provision of voter identity cards. Mr Tettey disclosed this in an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Cape Coast.

Available statistics indicated that 9,715 eligible voters registered in Cape Coast Metropolis, 14,701 in Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem District, 6,895 in Abura-Asebu Kwamankese District, 12,985 in Mfantseman District, 6,902 in Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District, 15,815 in Gomoa District, 22,283 in Awutu-Effutu-Senya District and 13,027 in Agona District.

The rest are, 7,173 in Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District, 8,586 in Assin North District, 6,122 in Assin South District, 9,320 in Twifo-Heman-Lower-Denkyira and 7,827 in Upper Denkyira District. He said about 100 challenge forms were received in the region during the exercise and registration review committees had established in the districts to deliberate on the concerns raised.

Mr Tettey said the committees were made up of a traditional ruler, EC District Officer, representatives from active political parties in the Region, District Director of Education and District Police Commander. He said allowances for registration officials had been paid and urged eligible voters who could not register to endeavour to register next year.
