Mankranso (Ash), Aug 03, GNA - About 133 contestants including five females from 42 electoral areas in the Ahafo-Ano South District, will compete in the forthcoming district assembly elections. The contestants comprise 68 farmers, 32 teachers with the rest being traders, purchasing clerks, carpenters and masons.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Mankranso on Wednesday, Mr Ernest Opoku, the District Electoral Officer, hinted that there was a marked increase in the number of contestants this year than previous ones during which the list of aspirants went below 120.

He said the Ahwerewam Electoral Area recorded the highest of six contestants followed by Fawomang, Dwinyama North and Kunsu-Dotiem with five each, whiles the rest had between two to four candidates. Mr Opoku said the filing of nomination of assembly members ended smoothly, adding that, nominations for the unit committees were in progress.

The Electoral Officer, however, urged the contestants, supporters, polling assistants and other stakeholders to co-operate to ensure the usual incident-free elections in the area.
