229 candidates to contest assembly elections in Kumasi

Kumasi, Aug 04, GNA - A total of 229 aspiring candidates have filed their nominations to contest 60 seats in the forthcoming district assembly elections in the Kumasi Metropolis on September 12. They are made up of 197 men representing 86 per cent and 32 women, representing 14 per cent, Mr Isaac Kofi Asumaning, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), told the Ghana News Agency in interview in Kumasi on Thursday.

He said the candidates are made up of various categories of professionals including farmers, teachers, mechanics, traders and others.

According to figures released by the EC, four persons filed their nominations to contest the Kwadaso seat, three for Asem, two for North Suntreso and three for Abrepo Junction.

Others are 11 for Odumasi, six each for Kentinkrono and Manhyia, eight for Asawase and two for Amakom.

The rest are four for Ahenbronum, five for Nsuase, three for Bohyen, four for Asafo and three for Patasi. Mr Asumaning said the Commission was to mount platforms for the candidates from August 21 to September 9 to enable the candidates present their manifestoes to the electorate. He appealed to the contestants to conduct their campaigns peacefully devoid of insults and accusations that would mar the beauty of the elections.
