The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has criticised the party’s decision to concede defeat early in the 2024 general elections.

After Dr Mahamudu Bawumia publicly conceded while voting was still ongoing, some party leaders, members, and sections of the public accused him of acting prematurely.

However, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, later clarified that the concession was not Dr Bawumia’s sole decision but one taken collectively by party executives, highlighting the internal decision-making dynamics within the party.

Reacting to the matter in an exclusive interview with Accra-based UTV on Monday, December 15, 2025, Kennedy Agyapong insisted that it was wrong for Dr Bawumia to accept defeat at that stage. He stressed that he would never have taken such a step if he had been the candidate.

Agyapong further argued that the party’s leadership lacks the political experience needed to navigate critical electoral moments, suggesting that their actions contributed to the party’s poor performance.

He added that he is “not a weak candidate” and would not have allowed such a situation to occur under his watch.

“I am not a weaker candidate; I am bold and decisive. I am not going to be a coward. They see other candidates as prey that they can feed on. Even the NDC cannot stand me. I am not going to accept defeat as early as 10 AM when a lot of MPs’ votes haven’t been counted,” he declared.

He added, “What political experience does Kodua and the party leadership have? Did they even think that taking that early decision when vote counting was ongoing was a problem? That means that they only thought about themselves and not the other parliamentary candidates.”
