We are not going to party with GHC20m – Ghana@60 committee

The Vice Chairman of the 30-member committee that would oversee the celebrations of Ghana’s 60th anniversary has assuaged perception that the 20 million earmarked for the event would be expended of triviality.

“I am unable now to tell you specifically now what the amount would be used for,” Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor conceded, but was emphatic the amount would not be spent on food, drinks, and merrymaking.

Mr. Jinapor who is also the Deputy Chief of Staff was shedding light on the activities of the anniversary committee on TV3 current affairs programme, New Day, on Saturday.

It was also carried live on 3FM 92.7 in Accra and Connect 97.1FM in Takoradi.

Already, the committee chaired by Ken Amankwah says the service to be rendered by members will be strictly on a pro bono basis.

The diamond anniversary celebration will be marked under the theme ‘Mobilising for Ghana’s Future’.

Mr. Jinapor told New Day sit-in-host Stephen Anti that the committee is also expected to come out with at least a monumental project in commemoration of the Ghana’s 60th anniversary.

But some Ghanaians have had cause to question the need to spend a whooping 20 million when the economy is dire situation.

“Yes one would say that in an economy that we find ourselves, 20 million is not chickenfeed. But if you also proceed on assumption that we are going to spend the 20 million on say food and drinks, and party, then one would come to the conclusion that this is just too much, but that is not what is going to happen,” Mr. Jinapor explained.
