Ghana to participate in Fifth Commonwealth Karate Championship

Accra, Aug. 17, GNA - Ghana would participate in the Fifth Commonwealth Karate Championship slated for 24th to 26th September at Pretoria, South Africa.

Mr Michael Nunoo, Chairman of the reconstituted Ghana Karate Do Association in a statement copied to the GNA Sports, said the Association will organize a special "Justify Your Inclusion," mini-tournament on Saturday August 22, at the Sports Hall of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium, Accra to select a team to represent Ghana at the tournament.

According to the statement, the tournament would be classified into four age categories: Ages 9-14; Ages 16-17; Ages 18-20; Senior (21 years and over). The statement said registration, weighing and determination of age categories will commence at 6am at the Sports Hall of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium on the same day of the competition.

The statement said Mr Tamura Yuki, the Second Secretary at the Japan Embassy would be among dignitaries who are expected to witness the tournament.

In an interview with Ghana News Agency, Mr Nunoo said Ghana's participation would be the first time a national Karate Team would be traveling outside West Africa for a major competition.

He said the boys have been preparing for the past few months for the 5th Commonwealth Karate Championship Games in South Africa, hence the need to start the 'Justify Your Inclusion' competition.

"We have assembled the best "Karatekas" in the four main categories in the country. The competition therefore promises to be action-packed and exciting."
