Inasmuch as I like the historical synopsis you presented, I disagree with the fact that Ghana is the beacon of African democracy. Although I concede that there is no perfect democracy in the world, Ghana must shift from using successful elections and change of governments as the benchmarks of her democracy. The fact is the framers of 1992 constitution appeared to offer semblances to rule of law and checks and balance but in effect, we have tyrant of the executive. Who appoints IGP, EC Chair, CJ, BNI Boss? A beacon of democracy where kleptocracy dances under the shadow of the so-called justice system. A beacon of democracy where police arrest Mr. "Not Known" for stealing 100 Ghana cedis, or a goat and invites "Mr. Known" for diverting billions of $s? A beacon of democracy where the real pillars behind contract killings are not thoroughly investigated? For example, Mr. Asiedu, a suspected murderer of Mr JB Danquah Adu, alleged that somebody contracted him for 2000 Ghana cedis. Where lies our civil, political and dutiful will to uncover those cretins master-minding the death of other sentient creatures? A beacon of democracy where a minister will beg foreigners to stop exploiting Ghana's resources illegally?

The insignificance of 1 July in our politics is the bad judgement of Nkrumah. He shd have listened to the opposition then to make Republic Day 6 th March 1961 to merge with the independence day. Nkrumah was in a hurry in 1960 and also to get two separate days 6th March and 1st July to celebrate him. Ghana is the poorer for this misjudgment. Nigerians were wiser. They chose 1st October to consolidate both their Independence and Republic Days.
